About Hawaii’s oldest surf shop: Surf N Sea
As the oldest surf shop in Hawaii, Surf N Sea has a lot of history behind its wood doors. Hawaii’s only surf shop on the beach and located on the North Shore, it’s not only our history that sets our shop apart — part of what has helped us thrive for more than 50 years is the people behind the counter.
Our iconic yellow building was built in 1921 as a dry goods and fishing supply store, but as sports grew on the island, so did the store. In 1965, Surf N Sea was founded as a sporting goods store, offering expertise on all things water sport.
After several years, our current owner Joe Green found the store. Joe moved from Florida to Oahu in hopes of catching the best waves, and along the way, he found the Surf N Sea business. In 1983, he bought the business, and it grew into the family-run shop it is today.
The Green family works hard to maintain the same authentic charm Joe fell in love with, while staying up-to-date on the latest trends in the surf industry. Among the modern surf and scuba gear, Joe’s collection of antique surfboards still has a home, as a nod to the past. He even has Duke Kahanamoku’s last ridden surfboard, still fitted with the original wax.
Surf N Sea is recognized by SIMA as the longest running surf shop in Hawaii, a huge honor, and is considered one of the pioneers of today’s surf culture.
In addition to the wide variety of products and apparel, Surf N Sea offers surf, scuba, kayak, and snorkeling, SUP rentals and tours, as well as whale watching and shark cage tours, for locals and tourists alike. The adventure never has to end!
