Are you looking for a new summer activity? If so, you should definitely try stand up paddleboarding, or SUP.  It’s fun, adventurous, and a great way to exercise with family and friends. Keep reading below as we go over what stand up paddleboarding is, where you can do it, and more!

What is stand up paddleboarding?

First things first, you’re probably wondering what stand up paddleboarding is. SUP originated in Hawaii and is a variation of surfing but uses a different style of board and also includes a paddle.

Surfing requires the rider to sit and wait for the wave to come to them before standing up and riding towards shore. There are many variations of surfboards, including longboards, shortboards, and fish boards. The size and length of surfboards vary depending on the type of wave the rider wants to surf.

Paddleboarding, on the other hand, allows the rider to stand on the board and use a paddle to propel through the water and over waves. Paddleboards are usually wider and longer to help with balance, and the paddle is very similar to that of a kayak paddle. The only difference is that they’re longer and usually only one sided, with a handle to grasp on one end.

Where can you paddleboard?

Now that you know what paddleboarding is, i’m sure you’re curious where you can do it. It can be confusing, since the paddleboard is so similar to a surfboard. You may be thinking that you can only do it on the ocean, but in fact, you can do it virtually anywhere!

Rivers, lakes, and oceans are all prime locations for paddleboarding. If you’re new to the sport, you may want to start out in a river or lake because the water is usually still and easier to practice on. In other words, rivers and lakes are great places to learn the sport without distraction from constantly moving water.
