Surf N Sea is very excited to wish FLHI Girlz Show a happy ten-year anniversary! This month, the legendary show celebrated a decade as the first ever women’s surf and sports magazine show.
On June 16, 2018, the show officially celebrated its tenth year. Kory Harvey hosted the decade show, which is fitting, because Harvey hosted the first show in the same location ten years ago.
Congrats to this amazing community!

The show features surfing, skating, motocross, roller derby, bodyboarding and more! The show takes viewers everywhere from the
oceans and beach culture to the soul of street sports. Harvey and her crew focus on details and passion in the sports and the women who make them exciting. Surf N Sea is a proud sponsor of FLHI Girlz, and for good reason — we’re all about inclusivity in the surfing and sport world, and we love the opportunity to promote incredible female athletes.

Right now, more women are surfing than ever before. In 1990, research showed that women accounted for about 3 percent to 5 percent of surfers, according to an article in The New York Times. In 2000, that number jumped to about 15 percent and has continued to rise since. Today, there are an estimated 27 million women surfing around the world. In the past, surf instructors and surf camps have noticed a pattern. While boys and girls make up equal parts of youth surf camps, the number of girls involved in surfing tends to start decreasing around age 13, according to Tom Corliss of Malibu Makos Surf Camp. In contrast,
boys stick with the sport much longer. By high school age, surf schools are usually only about a quarter female.

However, if young girls have other female role models — be it on the water or in the classroom — they’re more likely to stick with hobbies, sports and educational opportunities, even those that have been dominated by males in past.

That’s why the team at Surf N Sea loves shows like FLHI Girlz. It shows young girls that they can follow their passions and do amazing things!
