Have you fallen in love with all things SCUBA diving? Have you been diving for fun for years, but are ready to take your diving to the next level? Consider becoming a PADI Divemaster, a professional SCUBA dive certification that allows you to SCUBA dive as a career. It can be one of the most fun and rewarding jobs you’ll ever have! The team at Surf N Sea should know — we get to SCUBA dive every day for our jobs! We’ve compiled a few common questions about becoming a Divemaster below.

What is a Divemaster?

A certified Divemaster is basically a professional dive leader. They may be employed by a SCUBA tour company and take tourists out on dives, or they might help instructors teach SCUBA diving courses to new divers. They’re certified to supervise trainings, conduct briefings, assist with SCUBA programs and lead dives.

Why become a certified Divemaster?

This is one role that can take you from a hobby diver to a professional diver. If you’re interested in SCUBA diving for a living, this might be the right path for you! However, it’s more than just diving all day — you need to love teaching and working with others, helping foster a love of SCUBA in new divers, and be able to impart knowledge on others.

How can I become a Divemaster?

According to PADI, the SCUBA organization that is most commonly associated with Divemaster certifications, there are a few prerequisite requirements you must fulfill before you can take the PADI Divemaster course.

Those are:

  • Be at least 18 years old
  • Already hold your PADI Advanced Open Water Dive certification
  • Already be PADI Rescue Diver certified
  • Have had Emergency First Response Primary and Secondary Care (CPR and First Aid)
training within the past 24 months
  • Have logged at least 40 dives to begin the course, and 60 dives to earn the certification

If you check all those boxes, you can move forward with taking the PADI Divemaster course. You’ll want to sign up for a Divemaster certification course, like this one offered through Surf N Sea on the North Shore of Oahu. Contact us today to get started with your Divemaster training!
